About Paints and Finishes
Casting Gifts offers two types of finishes to complete your plaster castings: Clear Glaze and Acrylic Paint.
Clear Glaze: adds gloss shine to plaster, similar to that found on fired, glossy ceramic or porcelain. The formula we use is thick, crack resistant, and is colorless. Coverage is generally ideal when only one coat is applied, which allows a small amount of glaze to be stretched a long way. Glaze acts as a sealer, eliminating plaster dust while providing a shiny protective finish. It can also be used over acrylic paints. For shiny metallic acrylics, adding a layer of glaze will further protect the paint finish against chipping. On a matte acrylic, glaze can be used to protect while adding shine too. Our clear glaze is American made and conforms to ASTM - D4236 testing and safety standards.
Acrylic Paints: All the colored acrylic paints we use are high quality, water based, and American manufactured paints that meet ASTM - D4236 testing and safety standards. Our acrylics are highly pigmented to achieve the richest shade in each color palette. We offer acrylic paints in two types of finishes: Metallic and Matte.

Metallic Acrylic Paints are recommended for use with all of our plaster based products: 3D plaster hand and foot casting kits, keepsake shadow boxes, ornament kits, or belly casting kits. Metallic paints have a smooth, shiny finish, and can approximate the look of actual metal (especially in bronze).
The Champagne Taupe has a silvery golden Tone. The Pearl is a white pearlescent finish. The Black is not recommended for painting statues, but works well for antiquing, lettering on belly casts, or mixing with matte paints.

Matte Acrylic Paints: Our Matte acrylics are recommended for use with Mother Belly Pregnancy Belly Cast Kits. (The Metallic colors also look lovely on belly casts.) Although matte colors can technically also be used to paint a 3D hand casting or shadow box handprint, we tend to favor and recommend the more traditional metallic shades or the clear glaze for these.
In contrast to metallics, our Matte colors yield a smooth finish with no shine at all. Generally, these colors require two coats to cover well. Matte colors can be mixed to create additional color variations, which are especially helpful when creating belly cast art work. Our clear glaze can be brushed on over a matte finish to give a belly cast shine, or a spray gloss can be purchased on your own to do the same thing (and is probably quicker given the surface area to cover).
